A Palmdale man was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison in connection with sexually assaulting his girlfriend and her 9-year-old daughter, officials announced Tuesday.

Edward Raymond Walten pleaded no contest earlier this month to oral copulation with a child 10 years or younger and rape by force or fear, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Walten, 39, was also ordered to stay away from the victims for 10 years. As part of his plea agreement, he will be have to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life, officials said.

The incident occurred on March 24, when Walten was driving through the Littlerock area. The prosecutor in the case said Walten began assaulting his girlfriend. He then sexually assaulted the girlfriend’s daughter before he stopped the vehicle and sexually assaulted the older woman “in the desert,” officials said without elaborating.

The woman was able to call family members, who then alerted authorities. Walten and the victims were eventually found at the scene.

The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A Panorama City man has been charged in connection with killing his wife with a machete and wounding three neighbors over the weekend, officials said.

David Ernesto Rodriguez, 36, faces one count each of murder, premeditated attempted murder, first-degree burglary, along with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and mayhem, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

He also faces allegations of using a deadly and dangerous weapon and causing great bodily injury.

The incident occurred June 22, when Rodriguez allegedly chased his wife, Karla Rodriguez, out of their apartment along Roscoe Boulevard during an argument. The defendant allegedly stabbed the 32-year-old victim to death.

He then allegedly forced himself inside his neighbors’ apartment and attacked a couple and their 17-year-old son who tried to intervene, officials said.

The man’s arm, nose and eye were “seriously injured” by the weapon, while the woman’s head was cut and the teen’s hand was seriously hurt, according to the DA’s office. Authorities did not elaborate on the injuries.

Rodriguez was arrested at the scene by Los Angeles police officers.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Tuesday and prosecutors are recommending that bail be set at $3.35 million. Rodriguez faces 40 years to life in prison if convicted as charged.

Chyong Jen Tsai is seen in an undated photo released April 18, 2019, by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

A 76-year-old woman found dead in her Arcadia backyard earlier this year was killed by a man formerly been paid to renovate the home who returned to burglarize it, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Heber Enoc Diaz, 27, of Pasadena, is facing six felony counts including capital murder, elder abuse and burglary after allegedly using a hammer, jab saw and a box cutter in the April 9 slaying of Chyong Jen Tsai, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

L.A. County coroner’s records show Tsai died after being stabbed, beaten and strangled.

The homicide stunned and mystified neighbors after Tsai’s body was found on the lawn outside her home on the 300 block of East Forest Avenue by construction workers who came around 7 a.m. to continue a remodeling job.

In March, Diaz had been among the construction workers hired by the family, officials said. He’s accused of burglarizing the home while working there on March 19.

But Diaz was no longer employed by Tsai when he returned to the residence April 9, according to the DA’s office.

Prosecutors believe he was stealing things from Tsai’s garage when he encountered the woman and killed her.

A neighbor previously told KTLA some of the contractor’s tools were taken during a break-in shortly before Tsai’s death.

On the day she was killed, Tsai’s SUV — a white 2005 Lexus RX 300 — was also stolen, investigators said.

Neighbors described Tsai as a sweet and gregarious woman who was a wife, mother and grandmother. Her husband was out of the country when she was killed, they said.

The couple had a dog that was found at the scene unharmed.

Diaz was arrested on April 19 and charges were filed in the case April 23. He’s facing one count of murder with special circumstance allegations that the crime was committed during a robbery and a burglary, two counts of second-degree burglary and one count each of first-degree residential burglary, second-degree robbery and elder abuse.

Prosecutors say they’re also seeking sentencing enhancements for the allegations that he caused great bodily injury to a victim over age 70 and used deadly and dangerous weapons.

Two other defendants — 33-year-old Altadena man Luis Alonso Cruz Gaitan and Isis Ondina Villalobos, 26, of Pasadena — have been charged with acting as accessories after the fact. Gaitan also faces a second charge of receiving stolen property exceeding $950 in value, the DA’s office said.

Gaitan and Villalobos were both arrested May 8 and have pleaded not guilty to their charges, court and inmate records show.

Diaz was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday, but the date was continued to Aug. 28. A preliminary hearing for Gaitan and Villalobos was set for Friday.

If convicted as charged, Diaz could face the death penalty or life in state prison without the possibility of parole. Gaitan and Villalobos’ charges carry a maximum possible sentence of three years in county jail, prosecutors said.

Diaz was being held without bail, while bond was set at $1 million each for Gaitan and Villalobos.

A Monrovia man was sentenced Wednesday to life in state prison for sexually assaulting four women he abducted by luring them with money or drugs, prosecutors said.

Jason Chung Chien Yu, 43, was found guilty last month of three counts of sodomy by use of force, two counts each of kidnapping to commit rape, assault to commit rape and false imprisonment and one count each of forcible rape, forcible oral copulation and criminal threats, according to a Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office news release.

Investigators said he sought out women between 22 and 60 years old who were addicted to drugs. Yu would allegedly lure his victims into a dark-colored sedan, promising them money or drugs in exchange for sex.

In announcing Yu’s arrest in 2017, L.A. County Sheriff’s Lt. Todd Deeds said he “targets women that are more vulnerable than most.”

He would then take his victims to motels, where he held them captive and brutally sexually assaulted them, officials said.

Incidents occurred in El Monte, Monterey Park, Temple City and Lynwood, detectives said when Yu was taken into custody.

Prosecutors say the first assault occurred in February 2012, when Yu kidnapped a woman to commit rape.

He was also convicted of beating and sodomizing two women in April 2016 and kidnapping and sexually assaulting a fourth woman in February 2017.

A man who led authorities on an erratic pursuit from the San Fernando Valley to Hollywood in a stolen work van earlier this year was sentenced on Friday, prosecutors said.

Karapet Kirpichyan, 46, of North Hollywood, was sentenced to four years and eight months in state prison after negotiating a plea agreement with prosecutors, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

Kirpichyan pleaded no contest in April to taking a vehicle without consent and using the van in an assault with a deadly weapon.

The defendant had been convicted before of driving a vehicle without consent, the DA’s office said.

The police chase occurred Jan. 9, after Kirpichyan stole the van from the 10700 block of Magnolia Boulevard in North Hollywood. Officers spotted the vehicle in the 6900 block of Ranchito Avenue in Van Nuys and a pursuit ensued.

Kirpichyan led authorities south on the 101 Freeway before exiting onto surface streets at Hollywood Boulevard.

While turning from the off-ramp, the van ran into the back of another car getting off the freeway, causing the victim’s car to spin out into traffic.

The van was damaged but continued driving, at times on the wrong side of the road on busy Hollywood streets including along the Walk of Fame.

The chase ended in a crash along Highland Avenue south of Sunset Boulevard.

Kirpichyan collided with multiple other vehicles, injuring their occupants, and also knocked down a light pole, according to prosecutors.

He was previously facing hit-and-run charges in the case but did not plead to those as part of his negotiated plea agreement. If convicted on all the initial charges, Kirpichyan could have faced up to 13 years in prison.

A jury convicted a Montebello man of first-degree murder Friday for beating his girlfriend to death at a Baldwin Park motel and living with her body for six days before it was discovered, officials said.

Nicolas Figueroa Manos, 33, is scheduled to return to Los Angeles County Superior Court for a sentencing hearing on Aug. 27, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. He’s expected to receive 25 years to life in state prison.

The body of 19-year-old Nancy Ester Mederos Gudino of Baldwin Park was discovered on June 30, 2017, inside a motel room in the 13900 block of Francisquito Avenue, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and coroner’s officials said. Officers from the Baldwin Park Police Department were called to the motel to help remove the occupants.

“Upon their arrival, officers discovered a female Hispanic adult who had sustained trauma to her upper body,” Deputy Ryan Rouzan of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said in a written statement. “The trauma was caused by an unknown object.”

“Manos was in bed, while the victim was found on her back on the floor just outside of the bathroom,” the D.A’s office said in a written statement. “According to evidence presented at the trial, she had been dead for six days.”

An autopsy determined the victim died from “blunt force trauma and other undetermined factors,” Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records show. The death was ruled a homicide.

Detectives initially detained Manos as a “person of interest” in the case, sheriff’s officials said. He was arrested on suspicion of murder three days later.

A woman pleaded no contest Friday to charges alleging she killed her 64-year-old grandmother, whose body was found days later in the victim’s Bell apartment after the defendant had fled to Mexico, prosecutors said.

Sarah Paula Montoya, 27, was convicted of one count of voluntary manslaughter in the July 18, 2016, strangling death of 64-year-old Paula Montoya, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

The defendant was also convicted of three counts of kidnapping for taking her three children without the father’s permission when she fled the country, officials said.

She was immediately sentenced to 26 years in state prison.

The victim’s body was found wrapped in a blanket and in plastic in the bathroom of her home in the 6600 block of Pine Avenue three days after she was killed. Authorities had gone to the residence for a welfare check amid concern the grandmother hadn’t been seen for days.

Coroner’s officials determined Paula Montoya died from asphyxiation by compression to the neck and had also suffered broken ribs and a head contusion.

Sarah Montoya was arrested Aug. 3 at the Otay Mesa border crossing after investigators received a tip she was planning to reenter the U.S. from Mexico.

The killer’s motive was that she did not want her grandmother to be at her house anymore, according to evidence presented in court.

Detectives have said the defendant came and went to her grandmother’s quite often, staying for short periods of time.

Sheriff’s officials described the victim as a doting grandmother and great-grandmother who was an active member at her local church.

Ex-USC Gynecologist George Tyndall Pleads Not Guilty to Sexual Assault Charges

The attorney for the former University of Southern California campus gynecologist charged with sexual assault argued Monday his client is suffering from heart problems and diabetes and should be allowed to post bail.

Dr. George Tyndall, 72, appeared in Los Angeles Superior Court on 29 felony charges that could send him to prison for 53 years. Prosecutors say 16 patients ranging from 17 to 29 were abused during visits to the student health center for annual exams or other treatment.

Tyndall is being held on $2,075,000 bail in the Twin Towers Correctional Facility's medical unit after spending several days in the hospital following his Wednesday arrest. Tyndall's lawyer, Andrew Flier, entered a not-guilty plea for his client during the arraignment.

Flier said his client is neither a flight risk nor a danger to himself or anyone else. A bail review hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

Allegations against the doctor first surfaced in May 2018; authorities say they may file additional charges as they continue to talk to former patients.

In the past year, more than 380 women have reported misconduct by Tyndall, authorities said. Some of the cases fell outside the 10-year statute of limitations, while others did not rise to the level of criminal charges or lacked sufficient evidence to prosecute.

More than 700 women have filed lawsuits in state court against the doctor and USC. A separate $215 million federal class-action settlement that could potentially include thousands of payouts is in the works.

Flier said his client never conducted exams without a chaperone and never touched anyone inappropriately.

"None of this ever happened," he said in a news conference after the arraignment. "We hear 100, 200, 400 complaining witnesses. Well, without minimizing the number, we're down to 16."

Flier said his client has been threatened and was carrying a loaded revolver at the time of his arrest for protection.

Prosecutors charged Ivan Hernandez with one count each of murder and attempted robbery in the death of Victor McElhaney, the 21-year-old son of Oakland City Councilwoman Lynette Gibson McElhaney.

Hernandez allegedly shot the victim, a senior at USC's Thornton School of Music, about a mile away from campus while trying to rob him and his friends at a strip mall parking lot at Maple Avenue and Adams Boulevard at around 12:30 a.m. on March 10.

McElhaney was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Hernandez was arrested on June 28 and is currently being held on $2 million bail, county inmate records show.

He also faces special circumstance allegations that he committed murder during an attempted robbery and while being an active participant in a criminal street gang, making him eligible for the death penalty, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office said.

Los Angeles police previously said that around three to four men in their 20s were involved in the attempted robbery. Investigators have not released information about any other arrests in the case.

In the days after the shooting, Councilwoman McElhaney and her family pleaded for the shooter to come forward.

"Silence is worse than the actual bullet that killed my son," the Oakland official said at a news conference at USC. "Even the people involved. Be a man, step forward and take responsibility for your actions."

In May, the L.A. City Council announced a $50,000 reward for information relating to the incident.

Officials did not specify how and where Hernandez was arrested. County inmate records show that he had been detained in May 2018 but not charged. He was again detained on Dec. 8, 2018 and released the next day on bond, according to the county database. Details about his record were not immediately available.

Jose Manuel Salazar, aka “Issue,”  is facing one count each of attempted murder and possession of a firearm with violation of probation, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a news release. The allegations against Salazar include the use of a handgun to cause great bodily injury, and that the crime was committed in association with a criminal street gang.

Salazar is charged with shooting the victim while inside the mall on June 3. At the time of the shooting, an employee who did not want to be identified, said a man shot another man who had been arguing with a woman in front of the Skechers store. As a result of the shooting, the mall was placed on lockdown and evacuated sending shoppers and employees at the massive shopping center into a panic.

Cellphone video from the mall shooting scene showed bystanders rushing to help a bleeding man on the ground.

The victim was taken to a local hospital and later released.

Police said Salazar fled the mall shortly after the shooting.

He was detained on June 29 after being pulled over during a traffic stop just after 1:15 a.m. in Redondo Beach on suspicion of narcotics sales. Police said Salazar originally gave them a false name, but during the booking process he was positively identified as the gunman in the mall shooting.

Salazar is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon. His bail is scheduled to be set at more than $2 million, prosecutors said.

If convicted as charged, Salazar faces a possible maximum sentence of 47 years to life in state prison.

A man has been charged with leading police on a pursuit and barricading himself in a South Los Angeles apartment with his 2-month-old son, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.

Juan Manuel Zamora, 25, of Los Angeles, is facing one felony count each of fleeing a pursuing peace officer’s vehicle while driving recklessly, possession of an assault weapon, possession of a firearm by a felon, unlawful possession of ammunition and child abuse under circumstances or conditions likely to cause great bodily injury or death, prosecutors said in a news release.

He has also been charged with two misdemeanor counts of hit-and-run driving resulting in property damage, prosecutors said.

In the early morning hours of June 28, Los Angeles police tried to stop Zamora’s vehicle in a parking lot near South San Pedro Street and East Washington Boulevard while responding to a burglary alarm that went off at a nearby convenience store. Instead of stopping, police allege Zamora drove away hitting a  police car.

During the pursuit, police said Zamora stopped briefly while his passenger fled on foot.

He allegedly continued to lead police on a pursuit until he crashed into a traffic pole and ran into an apartment in the 300 block of 65th Street.

Police said a woman came out of the apartment and told officers Zamora was inside the couple’s apartment with their 2-month-old son.

After several hours of negotiations, Zamora peacefully surrendered to police.

If convicted as charged, Zamora faces a possible maximum sentence of 11 years in state prison.

He was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday afternoon.

An LAPD officer was placed on three years of summary probation after entering a no contest plea in a workers’ compensation fraud case, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Jason Gordon, 48, pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of workers’ compensation insurance fraud on Tuesday, according to a statement from the DA’s office.

Gordon, a nine-year veteran of the Los Angeles Police Department who was last assigned to the Valley Traffic Division, was arrested on Jan 17, 2018 on a warrant related to alleged workers’ compensation fraud and attempted perjury, according to an LAPD news release.

The case stemmed from a medical claim the officer filed in 2015, the release stated.

Gordon went on leave for several months in 2016 after being hurt on the job, prosecutors said.

But he was alleged to have engaged in physical workout activities that were not consistent with the alleged injuries, and therefore should not have received the benefits, according to investigators.

In addition to summary probation, a judge ordered Gordon to complete 300 hours of community service and pay over $12,000 in restitution, prosecutors said.

The punishment was part of a negotiated plea deal, according to the DA’s office.

In May, Jeremy Haggerty, 34, pleaded no contest to six counts of lewd acts on a child and three counts of sexual battery, all felonies. Wednesday’s sentencing was expected after his plea. Prosecutors dismissed several other counts that would have carried a longer sentence.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department began its investigation into Haggerty in August after one boy alleged that the coach had molested him. Within months, eight other boys — ages 14 to 17 at the time of the attacks — came forward with allegations of sexual assault that dated to 2008. Haggerty was arrested in September.

The coach told the boys they needed physical treatment, prosecutors said, before molesting them at their homes. He would massage the boys’ bodies, then touch them sexually, referring to the treatments as “body maintenance,” according to court documents.
